Gaman

PUBLICATION DESIGN
TIMELINE: 10 WEEKS

Inspired by my Grandma’s childhood, the publication explores the incarceration and discrimination the Issei (First-Generation) and Nisei (Second-Generation) faced following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the forced migration to camps.

As a topic rooted within Seattle’s history, information, documents, and photography was sourced from local organizations including the Densho Project, MOHAI, and Wing Luke Museum.

PATIENCE & PERSERVERANCE

The publication is separated into three sections: Shikata Ga Nai (the forced migration of all people of Japanese descent from the west coast to incarceration camps), Gaman (life in the camps), and Tadaima (the return to their homes afterward). Utilizing vellum, the book plays with the transparencies of text and photographic document that overlay on top of each other.
